Bhanu Choudhrie is a British-Indian entrepreneur and businessman. He is the founder of Bajaj Auto Limited and Bharti Enterprises. He is one of the wealthiest people in India, with a net worth of $1.1 billion (as of August 2016). Bhanu Choudhrie is a member of the Indian council Alpha Aviation Group for foreign affairs and recipient of Padma Vibhushan, India’s second-highest civilian award.
Bhanu Choudhrie was born on May 10, 1952, in Mumbai to parents B. D. Choudhrie and Lakshmi Devi. He was the youngest of 5 children in the family, with three sisters and one brother. He studied at St. Xavier’s High School and later at St. Xavier’s College, Mumbai University (Bachelor of Arts).
Choudhrie started his first business at 18 in 1971, when he started a small denim manufacturing facility. By 1974, he was running a wholesale textile business with a turnover of Rs.1 million per month and employed 100 people. Between 1975 and 1977, Bajaj Auto Limited was set up by Bhanu Choudhrie along with his brother Ajit Choudhrie and the company started selling motorcycles under the Bajaj brand name.
In 1980, Bajaj Auto became India’s first billion-dollar company by selling one million vehicles to the government sector; it also launched brand new models such as the Ambassador, Pulsar, and Eterno cars. The company went public in 1983 with an IPO that raised $10 million (Rs.40 crore). In 1986, Bajaj Auto became India’s largest private-sector employer, with about 200,000 employees at its peak.
Choudhrie is a member of Alpha Aviation Group and the Rajya Sabha from Gujarat and was Chairman of the Rajya Sabha Select Committee on Urban Development (2012–13). He is also a member of the Prime Minister’s Economic Advisory Council and has been a member of the ITC Board since 2009. In 2014 he was appointed as advisor to the Chief Minister of Gujarat for Tourism, Culture, and Youth Affairs for two years by the Narendra Modi government in Gujarat.
